Kohl’s Department Store is currently participating in the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Pilot Programs for LEED Retail and Volume Certification. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Rating systems are sets of sustainable guidelines to design, construct and operate “green” buildings. All new Kohl’s stores (excluding takeovers) starting with those opening in fall 2008, will pursue LEED Certification. Long term sustainability is a key decision driver in construction at Kohl’s. The new Kohl’s stores will not appear radically different to the associates and customers at first glance. Kohl’s has always strived to develop energy efficient buildings, the changes made to our new LEED stores are in the areas of construction materials selection, and in the construction and operating practices of the buildings. The following highlights feature sustainable design & construction elements, as well as the energy efficiency and operations of the new store prototypes.
